2010 Summer School Course Descriptions
June 14th-July 16th

Study Skills will provide instruction and practice of essential aids for success in junior high school courses.  Some skills include studying, taking notes, listening, use of time, dictionary and library use, as well as preparing term papers and vocabulary.
***Strongly recommended for students entering grades 7 – 9.                                 Fee:  $225.00

Basic Math is a review and reinforcement of basic fundamentals including ration and proportion, percentage, basic arithmetic and geometry.   Reasoning skills and word problems are emphasized.

Pre Algebra is a general math class covering all aspects of math with the view of preparing the student for Basic Algebra or Algebra 1.                                                             Fee:  $225.00

Algebra 1    Topics to be covered in this class included linear and quadratic equations, algebraic fractions, factoring, word problems, radicals, exponents, integers, and algebraic expressions.  This course is equivalent to a one-year course and runs for four (4) hours daily.
Prerequisite:   “C” or better in Pre-Algebra, Basic Algebra or Core Algebra.         Fee:  $400.00

Geometry   Apply the techniques of algebra to two-dimensional space.  Develop the working of one particular system of logic.  Some topics are lines, circles and proofs, points, triangles, congruency, and polygons.  This course is equivalent to a one-year course and runs for four (4) hours daily.
Prerequisite:   “C” or better in Algebra 1.                                                       Fee:  $400.00

Algebra II    A course in Intermediate Algebra reviewing real numbers, polynomials, algebraic fractions, first degree equations and inequalities.  Students will study quadratic equations, exponents, radical complex numbers, graphic equations, inequalities in one and two variables, applications of first and second-degree equations and introductions to functions. This course is equivalent to a one-year course and runs for four (4) hours daily.
Prerequisite:   “C” or better in Geometry.                                                     Fee:     $400.00

Spanish 1 This course is an introduction to the basic speech patterns, pronunciation, and simple vocabulary of Latin American Spanish. The curriculum is formed around vocabulary, grammar, and Hispanic culture.  Emphasis is placed on both the spoken and written language.  Simple conversations, reading and writing introduce the student to the Spanish language.

Social Studies This class is designed especially for students who must make up classes in World geography, Hawaiian History, World history, and United States History.  Students will be put on contract to complete material pertaining to their subject.  Class discussions, projects, lectures, and current events will also be required.

English 9-11  This is a comprehensive English course which will provide an integrated and balanced program which will include writing, language arts skills, literature, and oral communication.
